Now that I had the base stain done, I was ready for some graphic design! I haven’t done much painting – even less spray painting. Usually, I’m either meticulous about my research or a spray and pray type (literally!). This time I had the practice board to let me have a little bit of leeway with research and more hands on learning. Which has proven to be ridiculously fun, because I haven’t had any of my usual reservations about putting paint to wood.
I thought and thought and thought about how I would want to do the graphics on the board. My girlfriend loves to travel, and so I thought it fitting to choose a map design to put on the back of the board.
Design chosen, all I had to figure out was how to apply it. Through my research I had seen so many different ways to do this, but I have this stupid tendency to make things more difficult than they need to be – so I chose to try out an image transfer. I wish I had pictures of this stage, because it was a complete failure. Maybe that’s why I didn’t take pictures, but I tried using modge podge to image transfer a fairly complex picture onto the board and it was awful. So messy, and completely ineffective. I likely did it wrong – but regardless I didn’t want to try it again.
SAND SAND SAND SAND – and back to the drawing board.
So, I chose a simpler picture. Grayscaled and printed it, covered the entire board in blue painters tape, and glued it on.
Hours and hours of cutting out with a razor blade, (My neck may permanently be kinked in a downward direction) and I had a a stencil of the world! I realized that I had a large empty space below the US of A and so freehanded a compass onto the board and loved the way it looked
Gotta say, I’m pretty ecstatic about the results thus far. All that’s left is several layers of clear coat and I will be ready for the hardware. I wasn’t planning to put any grip or trucks on the practice board, but I can’t help it. Must try it out. After all, how will I know how to fix the real board if I don’t see what doesn’t work now? ( I mean that’s what I keep telling myself, but really, I’ve just been getting excited by all the videos I’m watching of people boarding!)
